  • San Gregorio Cathedral

    Bicol

    This handsome stone cathedral is a useful central landmark in Albay. It was built in 1839 after the original was destroyed in the 1814 Mayon eruption.

  • Vihara Dharmayana Temple

    Kuta & Legian

    Dating back nearly 200 years, this Buddhist temple is a colourful place of calm, slightly off the beaten path. Incense burns in the serene courtyard.

  • Hat Pleum Suk

    Phuket

    On Ko Sireh's east coast, this slightly scruffy sandy beach has a smattering of seafood restaurants and views out across Ao Phang-Nga's karst islets.

  • Van Lan

    Tam Coc

    Near the entrance to Tam Coc, Van Lan is famous for its embroidery. Local artisans make napkins, tablecloths, pillowcases and T-shirts. Bargain hard.

  • Masjid Agung At-Taqwa

    Balikpapan

    An impressive sight, this mosque is adorned with a complex sheath of Islamic geometrical patterns, and is lit up in multicoloured splendour at night.

  • Karang Tirta

    West Java

    Karang Tirta is a lagoon set back from the beach with bagang (fishing platforms). It’s 16km from Pangandaran and 2km south of the highway.

  • Sri Ganesh Temple

    Mandalay

    This temple's colourful, sculpture-crusted gopuram (monumental tower) will excite you if you’ve never been to southern India or Singapore.

  • Public Museum of North Sulawesi

    Manado

    This museum features a large display of traditional costumes, and an exhibit illustrating traditional pottery-making. There are captions in English.

  • Night Market

    Hue

    This nightly market is mainly focused on local arts and crafts, but there are also simple cafes and bars perfect for a riverside snack and a drink.

  • Damrei Sam Poan Stupa

    Cambodia

    The northwesternmost of the three stupas at Udong, built by King Chey Chetha II (r 1618–26) to hold the ashes of his predecessor, King Soriyopor.

  • Sapa Church

    Sapa

    Sapa's small stone church was built by the French and is still a central landmark. It opens for Mass on Sunday and on certain evenings for prayers.

  • Seri Wawasan Bridge

    Malaysia

    A vast arc of polished steel, this futuristic cable-stayed bridge joins Presint 2 and 8. It offers a marvellous vantage point towards Putra Mosque.

  • Tedong Tedong Minanga

    A collection of wooden coffins shaped like boats and buffalo. Further up the road at Buntu Balla, traditional weavers can often be found working.

    The market at the northern end of Cat Ba Town's harbour is a scruffy local affair with twitching crabs, jumbo shrimp and pyramids of fresh fruit.

    This is a tiny museum – really a small assemblage of religious paraphernalia and knick-knacks – inside Ko Kret's Wat Poramai Yikawat.

    Near Esperanza on Pacijan's northwest tip is touristy Timubo Cave, where a set of (slippery) stairs leads down to a refreshing cave pool.

    This pagoda's claim to fame – besides its gold stupa – is a Buddha image that supposedly dates to the reign of Indian emperor Ashoka.

    Facing the Pasar Johar market, Semarang's Grand Mosque is the main, although obviously far from the only, focus of worship in the city.

  • Hindu & Buddhist Temple

    Built in 1908, this temple is noteworthy for the strange teak pillar with 1000 small sitting Buddha images carved by a well-known monk.
