A short stroll downhill from Plaza de la Independencia, this small, inexpensive, and friendly place has hot water and dated but well-cared-for rooms.
Tena
Small rooms within a gated courtyard are simple, functional and clean, as is the tiny shared kitchen. Amenities include hammocks, hot water and wifi.
Uruguay
Hotel Municipal, down near the river, provides the Termas de Arapey area's best-value accommodations. An optional breakfast costs UR$125 per person.
Northern Patagonia

Bariloche & the Lake District
Well signed from Blvd Nahuel Huapi, this secluded but large lakeside campground can get very busy in summer, but when it’s quiet, it’s lovely.
Quebrada de Humahuaca
Rooms at this cheapie are decorated with local art, but like so many places in the Quebrada, it suffers from absent owners. Still, a decent deal.
Bariloche
Everything about this place screams ‘cute,’ but the rooms are big and airy, with small but spotless bathrooms and big-screen TVs. Good value.
Cuzco
In a bustling commercial district, this small hotel has agreeable staff and tiny, well-kept and airy doubles. The triples are a little too tight.
Minas Gerais
This trailside campground sits 4.5km below Caparaó summit on the Espírito Santo side of the park. Advance reservations by email are required.
Bariloche & the Lake District
Very standard and slightly spacious rooms just uphill from the plaza. It's the cheapest in town and not a bad deal as long as you're not fussy.
Quebrada de Humahuaca
At Aguacanto spruce rooms and apartments surround a lawn featuring hammocks and one of Tilcara’s most amazing views. The service is friendly.
Mendoza & the Central Andes
At the northern end of town, 300m west of Av San Martín, this isn't much too look at, but is the closest place to camp. Bathrooms and showers.
Córdoba & the Central Sierras
A good choice for duplex cabins that sleep four to six people. There's a swimming pool and lots of outdoor spaces, and the service is friendly.
South Coast
A basic but dependable three-storied yellow block with some 2nd-floor rooms offering peek-a-boo river views. There’s hot water and cable TV.
Amazon Basin
A block off the plaza, this friendly place maintains ultrabasic rooms arranged around a patio with a few hammocks. Not ideal for clean freaks.
Mendoza & the Central Andes
There's nothing really flash going on here, but the rooms are a decent size and the downtown location can't be beat. Good value for the price.
Northern Patagonia
Free backcountry campsites at the basin of the stunning amphitheater lake on Laguna Tronador trail, a steep two-hour climb from the trailhead.
