    Built in the 16th century and dedicated to Krishna, this temple has a small collection of carved panels from other area temples in its courtyard.

    Mcleod Ganj

    Through a gallery-cafe and film screenings, this organisation tells the tales of individual Tibetan lives as a way to illustrate Tibet's plight.

  • Jai Stambh

    This concrete pillar, erected to commemorate Indian independence, stands in the middle of a seven-way junction in the southwestern part of town.

  • Camel Stables

    Orchha

    Behind the Jehangir Mahal, the 'camel stables' (possibly, in fact, a royal pleasure pavilion) overlook a green landscape dotted with monuments.

  • Moti Dungri

    Jaipur

    This small, romantic fort looms above J Nehru Marg. It has served as a prison, but today remains in the possession of the former royal family.

  • St John's Wilderness Church

    Set in a peaceful grove above town, this church (c 1852) is one of the oldest buildings in Nainital, and exudes the atmosphere of another era.

  • Bryant Park

    Landscaped and stocked by the British officer after whom it’s named, pretty Bryant Park is usually full of tourists and canoodling couples.

  • New Lighthouse

    North Goa

    Outside the Fort Aguada bastions, the new lighthouse, built in 1976, can usually be visited; climb to the top for good views along the coast.

  • Dandeshwar Temple

    Sitting 2km outside Jageshwar on the approach to town is this attractive but low-key complex of 7th-century temples dedicated to Lord Shiva.

    Stars and octagons perforate the domed roofs of this tiny bathhouse, which had hot and cold water and a hypocaust (underfloor-heated) sauna.

    A small Shiva temple and a 19th-century mansion built by Nepali royalty sit back from Shivala Ghat, built by the local maharaja of Benares.

    Once a grand Jewish school building, this post office offers some curious photo ops, given its location in the heart of a busy market area.

  • Jama Masjid

    This impressive huge stone mosque was completed in 1845. Non-Muslims can't enter, but it's worth seeing the impressive three-domed facade.

  • Vizhinjam Marine Research Aquarium

    About 500m northwest of Kovalam's lighthouse, this small series of tanks displays fish from Kerala's waters, including lionfish and eels.

    Manali

    This small Tibetan monastery has an atmospheric prayer room crammed with statues of bodhisattvas (enlightened beings) and revered lamas.

  • Catherine Falls

    The Western Ghats

    Catherine Falls is 8km south of Kotagiri off the Mettupalayam road; the last 2km or so are on foot, and the falls only flow after rain.

  • Jagdamba Mata Shiva Statue

    Dalhousie

    Half a kilometre southeast of Khajjiar meadow towards Chamba, a 25m-high statue of Shiva makes a photogenic landmark near the roadside.

  • Tali Temple

    Kozhikode (Calicut)

    Dating back to the 14th century but restored in the 18th century, Calicut's major temple is dedicated to Shiva and open only to Hindus.

  • Raj Nivas

    Once home to Governor Dupleix, the neoclassical governor's residence looks out over Bharathi Park from the north. You can't go inside.

  • Sacred Heart Basilica

    Inaugurated in 1907, the Sacred Heart Basilica is a soaring brown-and-white neo-Gothic structure beautified by restored stained glass.

  • Sivaganga Tank

    Thanjavur (Tanjore)

    The park at the northern end of the Brihadishwara Temple compound contains the Sivaganga Tank.

  • Mission Church

    Kolkata (Calcutta)

    Hidden almost invisibly behind BBD Bagh, this Protestant church is Kolkata's second-oldest place of Christian worship, dating to 1770.

    In the northeastern corner of the Maidan, this chunky cenotaph formed of brown-stone blocks commemorates Calcuttans who fell in WWI.

    The Charkaman (Four Arches) area is named after four Qutb Shahi arches on and off Patthargatti, focused on the Gulzar Houz fountain.

    Built for the royal family of Travancore, this early-20th-century palace is now mostly a venue for cultural events and performances.

    Scindhia Ghat was originally built in 1830, but was so huge and magnificent that it collapsed into the river and had to be rebuilt.

  • Nehru Planetarium

    One of the five Nehru planetariums across India established to educate about the solar system; there are shows in English and Hindi.

    Pillar 25 (east of the Great Stupa) dates from the Sunga period (2nd century BC). Its lion capital is in the Archaeological Museum.

  • Jewish Cemetery

    Just southwest of Mattancherry's synagogue, the undisturbed Jewish Cemetery contains ancient tombstones marked with Hebrew script.

  • Spanish Mosque

    Hyderabad

    Constructed in 1906, this highly ornate mosque is Moorish-meets-Deccan in style, with an array of minarets, balconies and columns.

  • Rajbag Beach

    South Goa

    Quiet little Rajbag is dominated by the Lalit Golf & Spa Resort, but it's worth a wander over from Patnem Beach to the north.

  • Christ Church

    Towards the north end of MG Rd stands this fine neo-Gothic Anglican church, notable for its stained glass and 19th-century tombs.

  • Lakshman Gate

    Probably dating from the 14th century, this is the fourth gate you pass through on the way up to Gwalior Fort from the east side.

    Wandoor has a lovely blonde beach, though at the time of writing swimming was prohibited due to a fatal crocodile attack in 2017.
