The entries for the 54th edition of the competition were over 45,000, coming from 95 different countries. Out of those, 100 were selected as highly commended. Those that will showcase brilliant “creativity, originality and technical excellence,” will be chosen as winners.

The winners will be announced on 16 October, and the exhibition will begin three days later at the Natural History Museum (before going on a tour in the United Kingdom and abroad until the summer). Submissions for the 2019 competition will be accepted from 22 October to 13 December instead. In the meantime, you can see a selection of the finalists in the gallery here below.

Wildlife Photographer of the Year is developed and produced by the Natural History Museum of London, whose website you can visit here.
