South Carolina's only museum dedicated solely to Cherokee history is contained in a small white-brick building in the northwestern corner of the state. The organized and tidy exhibits tell the story of 'lower town,' so named because it was lower in elevation than neighboring Cherokee settlements in the Appalachian Mountains. The museum has been working to excavate one of the 'lower towns' and has plans to expand.
