On a farming estate in the municipality of Carvenago some 16km southeast of Bergamo, lies the crenellated brickwork of Castello di Malpaga. This was the residence of mercenary commander Bartolomeo Colleoni who had the original 14th-century castle expanded, and he turned the defensive walls into a kind of interior courtyard. Some original frescoes still remain in place.
