Scarcely populated, the island was home to Giuseppe Garibaldi, father of Italian unification, for almost thirty years, while its unspoilt natural environment has made it a popular hiking destination. The Maddalena Archipelago National Park was established in 1994, the first such park to be created in Sardinia.
