The World Photography Organisation has announced the shortlist and category winners in the 2020 Sony World Photography Awards Open competition.

More than 100 photographs were selected in this year's contest in categories such as architecture, culture, still life, street photography, natural world and wildlife, travel and more. Now in its 13th year, the awards also honour individual photographers in professional and student categories. The overall winner from each category will be announced on 9 June in an online ceremony. In the meantime, you can browse a selection of shortlisted images that caught our attention below, from unexpected light and shadow in the Swiss Alps to an aerial shot of women harvesting water lilies in the Mekong Delta.
