London is on its way to getting its very own version of New York City’s High Line, an elevated park and walkway along an abandoned train line, but exactly what the final result will be is yet to be determined – and that’s where you come in. The project developers are looking for design teams to help shape the disused railway viaduct that runs between Camden Town and King’s Cross in north London into a green artery for the city. There’s even a £10,000 (US$12,895) prize up for grabs.

The route will run for 1.2km and will be a verdant urban oasis about eight meters above ground level, and walking between Camden and King’s Cross could take just ten minutes. These elevated railway lines crisscross the neighbourhood and are a part of Camden’s history and identity. However, some of the structures have been out of use for more than 30 years, making them redundant and inaccessible to the public.

‘We’re thrilled to be taking this next big step towards realising Camden’s exciting new park in the sky”, Richard Terry, chairman of the Camden Highline, said. ‘We need it more than ever now, and I for one can’t wait to enjoy it.’

When it opens, the Camden Highline will be free to all and will likely include cafes, art installations, seating areas and spaces for charitable activities. An opening date has not been set yet and depends on funding and planning permission, but the project is aiming to have at least one section open by 2024.

Newbie and experienced design teams can enter the competition until 7 October on this website.
